The Town and where people live.

General Location Information and The Town

Participants of the various experiments were all volunteers and they were taken from all over the world. Neither the participants or the interns knew the location of the experiment they entered until they were found by the authorities. It was only then that they discovered that they were actually in Russia, out in an area where the natural human population was almost zero and the climate was very similar to that of the upper reaches of North America.

The town itself has no name. It was never a real town, instead it was constructed at the height of the cold war as a training camp for Russian soldiers, awaiting the day when they would be able to invade the USA. The town is a mock up of a small 1950s US town. It is carefully planned and laid out as the military imagined US small towns would look, rather than actually being perfectly like a US town. Most of the houses lie down quiet streets, each a carbon copy of the last, though there are some smaller houses and a few very large houses. The streets are wide and clean, the yards perfectly maintained, everything has that picturebook perfect quality about it. There are a lot of trees and architectural landscaping. It’s pretty and serene.

There is, though, a ‘nicer’ side of town, which is the area around the park. This is where the larger houses are and the properties here are of much finer quality and set in bigger plots of land. The ‘bad’ side of town lies around the cemetery and church where the plots are smaller, the houses at times pokey and everything has an air of disrepair surrounding it. That said, the majority of the houses in town are 'kit homes' - all with exactly the same layout. There are actually only a handful of different house types in town, though the quality of decoration and furnishings varies depending on where in town the property is located.

The furnishings in the houses are all very 1950s, though there have obviously been some additions to bring things up to scratch for the new residents. Each home has access to a state of the art computer. Every computer has access to the internet, though it appears that this is limited access – residents can find out what is going on in the world, but they are unable to interact with it. Internet access is strictly read-only. Any attempt to send messages through message books, chat rooms, chat programmes etc will fail. Emails can be sent, but replies are never received from the outside world, so it is not clear whether they actually reach their destination. Emails can be set to other people in town and they arrive, but there’s a delay of half an hour between sending a message and it arriving at its destination. Each computer also has access to a blog/journalling system which is limited to the residents of the town. Entries can be posted to this as public / private / friends only. There is no time lag on posts to a journal, nor on the posting of any comments to a journal.

Each house has a phone line, as does each business in town. There is a phone directory with every number in it on the computer which is updated as and when people move into the town. There is no cell phone coverage in town.

Residents of the town who arrived before the town was abandoned were allocated living accommodation by officials at the Town Hall. They were informed that change of living was not permitted, save by application to the Town Hall. Since the abandonment of the town, however, people have kept arriving, at random intervals. Each new person who arrives wakes up in the house they have been allocated with no knowledge of how they arrived there.

The town has some entertainment facilities. There is a bowling alley on Lavendar Road and a single screen movie theatre on Main Street. Middle Row hails a small video rental store with a fairly decent selection of films to choose from. There is also a vintage miniature golf course opposite the large park on Park Road.

There are also two places to eat out (both of which provide a collection-only take-out service). There is a soda shop and diner on Elm Street and a much more up market restaurant on Park Road. Finally, there is a bar on the east edge of town, though this is small and a bit of a dive - it does, though, have a single pool table, a juke box and a tiny dance floor.

The town also hosts a local radio station that transmits for a two mile radius around the town. The programming for the station is… varied at best, but it is a good port for local news and finding out what’s going on.

Since the town was abandoned, the stores and facilities have remained unlocked and 'open', though unless someone in town is still working there, they aren't staffed.

The town itself is about as much in the middle of nowhere as you can get. Each household is provided with motorised transport (though, again, all vehicles are from the 1950s) and there is a garage and gas station on Lavender Road, but should anyone take it upon themselves to attempt to drive out of town, they would run out of gas before meeting another living soul. Main Street and Church Road peter out from well maintained, asphalted roads to dirt tracks about five miles out of town in each direction and after that the tracks simply run on as far as the eye can see towards the horizon. There is nothing else out there.
